I know a lot of people who think of themselves as “spiritual” but are averse to religion. They embrace spirituality and accept that there is a great force behind creation – many are comfortable with the notion of God. But religion is shunned.
Why is this? I suspect a major reason is that they have had negative experiences of religion themselves. Or they are aware of some of the bad press religion gets – and rightly so considering the some of the appalling things done in the name of religion. Another reason may be that they don’t like to be beholden to religious authority.
Give the religions a break – they are ancient
